UPDATE: According to Craig Marshall, Cubensis’ founder and lead guitarist, Harris’ condition is NOT appendicitis. His fainting was attributed to high blood pressure and kidney problems. Harris is consulting his physician.
Yesterday was set to be another one of the monthly Saturday afternoon Cubensis shows at the Lighthouse in Hermosa Beach, CA. The stage was set, the room was full and the lights were ready to come up on the legendary Southern California Grateful Dead Experience.
Then, something went wrong. Steve Harris, Cubensis’ long time drummer, began to feel faint. His brow showed signs of perspiration and then, according to an eye witness, his face went “ghost white.” Steve made his way to the bar for some water and immediately dropped to his knees. Paramedics were called and Harris was rushed to the hospital. Early reports are Harris had an attack of appendicitis. No additional information has been provided, but when we hear something, we’ll post it up.
The show went on thanks to “Papa” John Enriquez who took up Harris’ sticks and played the whole show from the bullpen. Enriquez, who normally provides the stage tie-dyes that decorate the Cubensis stage, has sat in with Cubensis on djembe during performances at the Sunset House of Blues. Enriquez remarked that he was happy he could help out. Ed Fletcher, Cubensis second drummer, was absent for this show.
A nice addition to the line-up was Harris’ son Bryce, who jumped up with his djembe for a drum jam with Enriquez.
Here’s to a rapid recovery for Steve. Please send Steve your love on his Facebook page.
