Another rock n’ roll icon of the Sunset Strip may go the way of the Dodo, slipping into extinction. The West Hollywood City Council is terminating the lease on the House of Blues and is giving it’s prime slice of real estate along the legendary Sunset Strip to developers who desire to knock down the classic New Orleans themed venue to build a combination hotel, condo and housing complex. Project is slated to begin in 2025.
The proposed complex includes a 149 room hotel, 40 condo units and 27 affordable housing units on a 35,000 square foot area. The building being proposed will also be a 7 story led lit digital moving billboard; a fact that local residents in the area are a bit uneasy about. Sunset Time Development will develop the project if approved.
The House of Blues has gotten some unwanted attention in recent years following the murder of hostess Lana Clarkson by Phil Spector and a stabbing death at the venue 4 years ago. Other Sunset Strip venues like the Knitting Factory have recently met with similar fates as the slowly fading, House of Blues…all during the supposed revival of the Sunset Strip. They recently held a grand unveiling of the new strip and held the Sunset Strip Music Festival. The House of Blues has occupied this location since 1994.
“We have a lease, which with renewals rights, goes through 2025, and we plan on continuing our operations at the venue and look forward to being a continued part of the West Hollywood community,” commented a Live Nation Spokesperson.
Let’s hope the Hotel Gods don’t beat the Music Gods in this fight.
