7 Walkers feat Bill Kreutzman at Saint Rocke in Hermosa Beach, CA

Papa Mali and Bill Kreutzman

A tasty musical treat rolled through Hermosa Beach on Monday, October 25th.  7 Walkers featuring half of the Grateful Dead’s Rhythm Devils, Bill Kreutzman, performed at the intimate little venue, Saint Rocke to the thrill and enjoyment of all who attended.  The venue, which is quickly becoming the hot spot in the South Bay holds a few hundred people.  Nothing like an intimate show to kick off the week.

7 Walkers

This was my first foray into the land of 7 Walkers.  A band that only recently popped up on the jam scene radar.  A blues rock 4 piece band that has the pleasure of having Bill Kreutzman of the Grateful Dead behind the drum kit, George Porter, Jr. of the Funky Meters on the bass, Papa Mali on guitar and Matt Hubbard on keys.

7 Walkers at Saint Rocke

This line-up brought out a huge contingent of local Deadheads as well as some recognizable faces around the jamband community.  Spotted in the crowd at the 7 Walkers show were Darren Pujalet, drummer from Particle, Craig Marshall and Larry Ryan of Cubensis, and Bobby Easton from Delta Nove.  Moonalice opened up the show.

7 Walkers will release their debut album on November 2nd.  “George (Porter, Jr.) joined the band after we finished the album so we went back into the studio and added one track with him playing,” said Papa Mali.

The setlist at Saint Rocke was chock full of Dead songs including a first set “Bird Song” and second set “Goin’ Down The Road,” “Wharf Rat,” “Mr. Charlie” and a show closing “Sugaree” that was amazing.  They ended the first set with their signature song, “7 Walkers.”

I’ll be catching these guys again.  They put on a greats show!
