Whenever there’s a three day weekend, there’s the chance to have more music packed into your non-working hours. With that in mind, here’s a little list of musical suggestions for this memorial day weekend if you live in Southern California.
Thursday (because every good three day weekend starts on a Thursday, right):
The one and only Melvin Seals & JGB will kick off a CA run of shows at Saint Rocke in Hermosa Beach with local favorites, Grampas Grass and an acoustic performance by Nate LaPointe and Craig Marshall of Cubensis. The hot pick to get your weekend off to a good start.
Brethren of the Coast & Johnny Stachela Band at DiPiazza’s in Long Beach, CA. If you want to get your Southern Rockin’ juices flowing, just go to this show. Brethren features son of Allman Brothers Dickie Betts, Duane Betts, on guitar. Johnny Stachela is no slouch either.
Friday:
Quactus and Brothers Gow take over Winston’s OB in Ocean Beach, CA (San Diego) for a night of prog rock/jamtastic awesomeness. Faces will melt…I guarantee it. SHOW INFO HERE.
JGB continues with a stop at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano, CA with OC’s best blues band, Gospel Swamp Blues Band and Blackberry Jam. This is GSBB’s last show with lead singer, Sean Vine. Should be a great show. TICKETS HERE
Cubensis and Moonalice at PCH Club in Long Beach, CA. A familiar pairing to those of us in the Southland and always a good time.
Saturday, Sunday & Monday:
Head South to Winston’s OB for more JGB or North to Topanga, CA for the Topanga Days Festival. This is a tough decision. Topanga Days will feature a long list of incredible acts. Here’s the complete Topanga Days line-up by day and stage.

If you’re still wanting to get that music fix on Sunday night, Cubensis and Moonalice will hit The Mint in LA for another round of Grateful Dead and Moonalice music. (Shawn Cunnane, guitarist for The Periodical will be guest Cubensis guitarist both at Topanga Days and The Mint).
No matter what your plans are for the holiday weekend, get out and have a good time but be safe. Remember why we get this weekend holiday. Give thanks to those who paid the ultimate price for our right to get out and enjoy great music. Happy Memorial Day!
