Mark today in your calendar as the day that the last soul man took his place in the stars. Legendary soul man, Bobby Womack has died. Womack, known for his early work as guitarist for blues legend, Sam Cooke, died in his sleep at his home in Sherman Oaks, CA. Womack was 70 years old.
Over the years, Womack has contributed to the albums of many great artists including Janis Joplin, Sly & The Family Stone and Aretha Franklin. One notable contribution to rock n’ roll is his song, “It’s All Over Now” recoded by the Rolling Stones giving them their first #1 hit in the UK. His song, “Across 110th St.” has been featured in films including Quentin Tarantino classic, Jackie Brown. Womack’s last live performance was at Bonnaroo Music Festival this year. He was scheduled to tour Europe in the coming months.
The cause and details of Womack’s passing are unknown at this time and I will update as that information is released.
On a side note, I had the distinct pleasure of doing some work for Mr. Womack and his guitarist, Nate LaPointe over the last year and I have to say that it was a pleasure to have been associated with such a legend and wonderful individual. This is truly a very sad day.
Here’s one of the last interviews Womack did with LaPointe at Relix Magazine in NYC last December.
