On Friday night in Los Angeles, an all-star cast of musicians came together for a night of music celebrating the work of Grateful Dead legend Jerry Garcia. David Hidalgo, Amos Lee, Sam Bush, Margo Price, Stephen Malkmus and many more joined the house band consisting of Benmont Tench, Sean Watkins, Tyler Chester and Jay Bellerose for their tributes to the late great Grateful Dead patriarch.

Actor Ed Helms introduced the show, and asked the audience to please not do any phone videos, because this performance was ‘just for us’. Almost everybody listened. It’s been a while since I’ve seen a show without everyone’s phones up in the air.

The night started with “Dire Wolf” lead by Josh Ritter, Jamie Drake and Sara Watkins (Nickel Creek), followed by Watkins and Sam Bush taking on “Shady Grove.” Bush, Watkins and her brother, Sean (Nickel Creek), were then joined by Willie Watson for “Jack-A-Roe” before MC Taylor and Mike Campbell led on “Loser.”

Billy Strings made his first appearance of the night with “To Lay Me Down.”  Stephen Malkmus and David Hidalgo (Los Lobos) took over for “Bertha.” Malkmus would return in the first set for “I’ve Been All Around This World” after Banditos’ “New Speedway Boogie.”  The set closed out with “Black Muddy River” and “Sugaree” with Amos Lee, Campbell and Banditos vocalist Mary Beth Richardson.

Set two opened with a “Casey Jones” featuring Margo Price on both vocals and drums, while Ritter returned for “Louis Collins.” MC Taylor also came back for “China Doll,” Campbell and Jason Sinay joined up for “Deal” and “The Legend of the Johnson Boys” also featuring Bush, Strings, Watkins, Chris Funk (Decemberists), Molly Tuttle and more.

Next up Tuttle and String for “Long Lonesome Road” before Bush and Hidalgo returned for the Los Lobos classic and oft Garcia covered, “Evangeline.” The duo kept going with “Friend of the Devil” featuring Price.  The Watkins’ took the came out for “Brokedown Palace” and the second set closed with “Ripple” led by Drake.  A fitting encore of “Going Down the Road Feeling Bad” with all hands on deck closed out the night.
