Day 3 of Skull & Roses 2 was simple. One stage, three bands and out the door by sunset. Easy right? Usually the best of the fest is Saturday night, right? Not at Skull & Roses 2.
Sunday brought a bluegrass opening act, Grateful Bluegrass Boys w/ Aaron Redner of Hot Buttered Rum and Scotty Brown & Issac Cantor from Dusty Green Bones. They certainly got the blood pumping in the, seemingly, sleepy Sunday morning festival crowd.
Next up was someone who needs no introduction and certainly one of the highlights of the weekend. The incomparable and legendary, Melvin Seals & JGB. With heavy Hammond B3 tones from Seals and signature Jerry licks from guitarist Zach Nugent, Melvin and company delivered as expected…a walk down Jerry Garcia Band memory lane. It being a Sunday, they of course brought some gospel with Garcia’s own daughter, Sunshine, singing backup alongside Lady Chi.
Lastly, the all-star band of the weekend, Golden Gate Wingmen took to the Wall of Sound Stage. GGW is a cornucopia of great players w/ Jay Lane (Primus, Ratdog, Furthur, Les Claypool) on drums, Reed Mathis (Electric Beethoven, Tea Leaf Green, Billy & the Kids) on bass, Jeff Chimenti (Ratdog, Other Ones, Dead, Furthur) on keys and John Kadlicik (Dark Star Orchestra, Furthur, Phil Lesh & Friends). They delivered two sets of great tunes and closed out a perfect weekend of Grateful Dead music.
A special shout out to the production crew must be given. DJE Sound & Lighting, the Skull & Roses crew, Steve Parish for the Wall of Sound, Dennis McNally and of course, Skull & Roses founder, Chris (last name withheld to protect the innocent).
Thank you…for a real good time!
