Dead & Company returned Tuesday night, June 4, to the Hollywood Bowl to round out the two night stand at the legendary LA venue.
Would this night be cosmically different than the night before which took on a fairly subdued and mellow vibe compared to the rock n’ rollin’ shows I personally enjoy? You betcha!
The boys took the stage just after 7pm, as they did the night before, but this time it was a bit different. A loud booming voice came over the loud speaker as the band took the stage introducing the LA High School Jazz Band who then began to play the John Coltrane standard, “Love Supreme”. Dead & Company jumped right on in with them as they jammed out Love Supreme into a tasty Shakedown Street, which the kids from LAHS stuck around on for the first half of. Certainly a rousing way to kick off night two!
The hits just kept coming and my seat stayed vacant as they kept the whole house up and dancing to Friend of the Devil, Alabama Getaway and personal favorite, Ramble on Rose. Shakedown & RoR both in the first set made me happy! A sing-a-long high energy Fire on the Mountain closed it out to end the first set.
Estimated Prophet kicked off set two to the delight of the Southern California crowd all singing in unison, “California…!” The energy remained high with the Grateful Dead’s most familiar tunes, Truckin’, giving the whole audience, both newbie and veteran alike, another chance to sing out loud along with the band. A heartfelt He’s Gone, complete with visual images of GD late vocalist/guitarist, Jerry Garcia, filling the large screen behind the band.
Lovelight dove into a more tribal drums than the night before along with a very interstellar “Space” with Mickey Hart taking his spot at “The Beam” to “call the aliens” as I heard one fan exclaim. They finished off A Love Supreme before closing the night out with Standing on the Moon and U.S. Blues.
A tear came to the eye as they sent all away with the slow ballad, Brokedown Palace.
Thank you, Dead & Company, for a real good time in LA! See you next time you comin’ around…
