Bringing back a 30-year-old technology, however, isn’t the simplest of things. Not only did the band commit to a cassette, they did it as a double cassette with long compositions involved. As far as artwork and layout go, crafting a cassette cover also offers different challenges than a CD or vinyl. It was ambitious. But The Higgs achieved it because they wanted to live up to their concept and they felt it was an important part of the album’s promise.
“There would be times when people involved would say ‘Can’t we just…’ and we’d laugh and the answer would be like, ‘No, that’s not how it works,’ or, ‘No, that wouldn’t be authentic.’ It was fun, and, in a way, therapeutic!’” The Higgs said in a group statement. “We really enjoyed the challenge of bringing back an antiquated technology in one of the most challenging formats possible. We know that our fans and the growing number of cassette gurus out there alike will appreciate what we did.”
As far as the record’s content goes, “there’s a mix of older and newer material,” guitarist John Lovero explained. “Some of the songs were really new when we recorded this stuff and some of them could have been like five years old. So it’s kind of a blend of everything.” The album also features choice covers from Pink Floyd and The Band.

While Rose Will Fall – Mixtape is a live album, The Higgs — consisting of Lovero, Jennings drummer Garrett Morris and bassist David Barsky — consciously set out on the road with the idea in mind, meticulously crafting and curating the set using the venues they played as studios and their fans as producers — the Moontower. Also like a studio album, the recordings boast a certain continuity. To mix the record, the band enlisted the help of J.P. Hesser (Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Circles Around The Sun) at Cast Away 7 Studios.
To helm mastering duties, The Higgs tapped Louie Teran and George Shaw at Century 22 Studios, the same team that mastered the band’s 2018 debut live album Road Less Traveled, Vol 1: Live From the Crazy Horse Saloon. Louie Teran has also worked on recordings by such luminaries as The Rolling Stones and Dave Matthews Band. Album’s artwork, crafted by Chris Bertetta.
Along with the CDs and limited edition cassettes, Rose Will Fall – Mixtape will also be available on streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music.
