This week the Toronto based band, Little Kid, announced a new album titled Transfiguration Highway to be released July 3rd. To be honest, I’d never heard of Little Kid when I received the email from them wondering if I’d give their new album a listen. I’m always game to give new music a shot and so, I did.
Before hitting play, I gave a quick perusing to their bio and background.
Their brief bio states, “Based out of Toronto and operating since 2011. Although keeping a relatively low profile, over the years, Little Kid has shared stages with Car Seat Headrest, Pinegrove, Keaton Henson, Horse Jumper of Love, Fog Lake, Ellis, Crywank, Emily Yacina, Yohuna, Friendship. Half Waif, Current Joys and developed an extremely dedicated following.”
Now, being from the lower 48 and living, largely, in the world of the jambands, most of the above meant nothing to me, so I went in with an open mind and ears.
First thing that hit me from the jump was the Dylan/Neil Young-esque opening number, “I Thought You’d Be Raptured”. Catchy beat with the Bob Dylan rapid fire lyrical style and harmonica. By the time you get to the title track, “Transfiguration Highway,” they’ve started to take on more of a Snow Patrol sound…if Snow Patrol had a more spiritual side. From there it’s an ethereal musical journey into more of the same.
Their first single off the new offering is “Losing” which is available right now and you can stream it online at any number of places but Shakedown News has it right here for you to give it a listen. I liken this song to the spirituals performed by Jerry Garcia Band.

This is a great offering from Little Kid. Not a rocker, by any stretch of the imagination but if you like the lilting/rootsy sounds of Neil Young and Bob Dylan, give these guys a listen. My top picks from the album, in order of appearance, “I Thought That You’d Been Raptured,” Transfiguration Highway,” and “Losing.”
Dim the lights, put on some headphones and take a trip down the Transfiguration Highway.
