While my home turf, Hermosa Beach, CA was brimming with everything from the early morning Hermosa Beach Ironman (a 1 mile run, 1 mile swim and a 6 pack chug), Barley Legal’s Big Lebowski Party at On The Rocks and many house parties on the strand, Shakedown News ventured up to the Marnina Del Rey RockFest at the Waterfront Music Hall featuring Cubensis from 4-8pm.
While Nate LaPointe was busy adding guitar leads to the Barley Legal show, Craig Marshall, Cubensis’ longtime leader, picked up the slack and filled the empty guitar gap nicely. A special guest appearance at the end of the show by Scott McGregor from The Maykers on lead vocals capped off yet another great Cubensis show. Cubensis plays the Waterfront every Sunday from 4-8pm. It’s an all ages show!
The interesting dynamic that occurred at the Waterfront was certainly the music in the parking lot while Cubensis was playing upstairs. No Duh!, a tribute to No Doubt and Fan Halen, the Van Halen tribute were among the bands that entertained the crowd. I’ve gotta say, both bands were disturbingly good and even looked the part of the bands they covered. I saw the “Gwen Stefani” of No Duh! walking out of the bathroom and even up close she looks like the read deal. I can’t get over how much the “Michael Anthony” of Fan Halen looks like his bass playing reality twin.

All capped off with a brilliant fireworks show over the Marnia, the 4th of July was a great time at the Waterfront. Granted, I know the Southbay went off but alas, I cannot be two places at one time. Too bad, that would be cool!
